The University of Chester is a campus university located in the historic city of Chester, England. It was established as the University College of North West England in 1839 and became the University of Chester in 1992. Its motto is Pro Scientia et Humanitate (“For Knowledge and Humanity”)

The university is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, Universities UK, European University Association, and The Association of Northern Universities.

The university has two sites: City Campus on Devonshire Street and Sefton Campus at Upton by Chester railway station. A third site, London Road Campus (formerly Newton Park Campus), is located near Chester City Centre on London Road South, with access to Chester Railway Station and the Manchester Metrolink network. Since 1965, it has been a member of the University of Liverpool’s federal University System, now known as the Federation of Liverpool John Moores Universities.

The institution became a university in 1992 with the right to award its degrees and since 2001 has been known as the University of Chester. It is one of only three institutions outside London to have achieved top-ten status in The Sunday Times Good University Guide and The Complete University Guide. In 2017/18, it had over 19,000 students (including nearly 3,500 international students), making it one of the largest universities in the UK. 

The university offers courses across five academic faculties: Arts; Business & Law; Education & Social Sciences; Health & Life Sciences; and Science & Engineering. It also provides research facilities and resources for students, staff, and alumni at its main campus on Sealand Road, its partners across Cheshire West and Chester Council area, or further afield nationally or internationally. The University is also home to a thriving research environment with over 50 centres and institutes backed by over £15 million in research funding each year.


The University of Chester has been awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Further and Higher Education on multiple occasions. In 2009 it received an award for its work in crime prevention and reduction. 

The university is currently ranked as one of the top 10 universities in the North West region, with over 20% of its students achieving first-class degrees. The University also holds an overall satisfaction rating of 92% from its students.

In 2018, The Complete University Guide ranked The University of Chester 91st out of 113 institutions in the UK and 98th out of 129 institutions in England. The 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings placed The University of Chester at 1,101-1,200th place overall, while The Guardian put it 77th out of 94 institutions in Britain. The Complete University Guide 2019 also awarded The University of Chester five stars for ‘Student Satisfaction’ and four stars for Research Quality.

Scholarship opportunities 

The University of Chester offers several scholarship opportunities for international students. The scholarships are designed to encourage and support outstanding students who wish to study at the University.

All scholarships awarded by the University are subject to approval by the UK Border Agency and will be awarded based on academic excellence or achievement. Applicants must meet the entry requirements of their chosen course before they can be considered for any scholarships available at that level.

The University of Chester offers all new students the chance to apply for one of its university-wide scholarships. The awards are worth up to £500 and are available to UK, EU, and international students who have applied to study at UoC in September 2022. 

The award will be given based on academic excellence and outstanding achievement in A levels or equivalent qualifications (or equivalent). It is also open to applicants who have achieved high grades but may have had a break in their education or been away from formal study for some time.
