eVisa, Share Code and BRP: What Nigerian Students Do After Landing in the UK

What is a UK eVisa? Learn how Nigerian students set up a UKVI account, generate a share code and what replaced the BRP card after arrival.
UK eVisa for Nigerian students

The UK is replacing physical immigration cards (BRPs) with a digital record called an eVisa. As a Nigerian student, you prove your right to study and stay by creating a UKVI account and using a “share code” from the gov.uk “view and prove your immigration status” service, rather than showing a card. Follow the instructions in your visa decision email and check gov.uk, since the process is still changing.

What is an eVisa?

An eVisa is an online record of your immigration permission held by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). It replaces most physical documents, such as the Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) card. You access it through your UKVI account.

What happened to the BRP card?

The Home Office has been phasing out BRP cards and similar paper documents in favour of eVisas. Many students who previously received a BRP after arriving now rely on their digital record instead. Check your visa decision email for the exact instructions that apply to your application, because some people may still receive a physical document or an entry vignette in their passport.

Step-by-step: what to do before and after arrival

  1. Read your decision email. It explains how your permission is recorded and what to do next.
  2. Create your UKVI account. Use the same passport details as your visa application. Keep the login details safe.
  3. Check your details. Confirm that your name, date of birth, passport number and permission dates are right. Report errors to UKVI quickly.
  4. Travel with your passport and documents. Carry your CAS, offer, funds evidence and accommodation details in case you are asked at the border. See our final checklist before flying to the UK.
  5. After arrival, confirm your eVisa works. Log in to your UKVI account and make sure your status shows correctly.

What is a share code and when do you need it?

A share code is a short code you generate in your UKVI account that lets someone, such as a landlord or employer, see your immigration status for a limited time. Students may need share codes to rent accommodation, start part-time work (if allowed) or prove their status. Use only the official gov.uk service to generate one, and never share your UKVI login with anyone. Share codes expire, so create a new one each time.

Situation What you usually do
Landlord asks to check your right to rent Give your share code and date of birth
Employer asks about your right to work Give your share code; check your work limits first
University asks for status evidence Follow the university’s instructions; they may use their own check
Airline or border officer asks Show your passport and the documents they request

Lost or damaged documents and updating details

If your passport is renewed or replaced, your details need to be updated in your UKVI account. If you lose a physical document that you were issued, report it to the correct service. Check gov.uk for the current process because it differs by situation.

Common problems to avoid

  • Applying for a UKVI account with details that differ from your visa application.
  • Sharing your UKVI login or code with an unknown person. Scammers target students. See UK study scams in Nigeria.
  • Waiting too long to fix an error in your digital record.
