Direct Entry to a UK Degree with OND, ND, HND or Nigerian University Credits

Can you join Year 2 or 3 of a UK degree with OND, ND, HND or Nigerian university credits? See how advanced entry works and what to prepare.
Direct entry to UK university from Nigeria

Yes, some UK universities let Nigerian students join Year 2 or Year 3 of a bachelor’s degree if they already hold credits or qualifications such as an OND, ND, HND, NCE or part of a Nigerian university degree. It is decided case by case by each university, so it is called “advanced entry” or “direct entry”, and it is never automatic.

What is direct entry (advanced entry) to a UK degree?

Instead of starting in Year 1, you enter a later year of a three-year bachelor’s course because the university recognises your earlier study. This can reduce tuition and living costs by a year, but only if the university agrees that your previous study matches the modules you would skip.

Which Nigerian qualifications can lead to direct entry?

Qualification Possible route (varies by university)
HND May be considered for entry to the final year of a related degree, often called a top-up. See HND opportunities at UK universities.
OND or ND May be considered for Year 1 or sometimes Year 2 of a related degree, or a foundation/diploma route. Policies differ widely.
NCE May be assessed for credit in education-related courses.
Part-completed Nigerian degree The university may grant credit for modules already passed; this needs transcripts and module descriptions.
WAEC/NECO only Usually points to Year 1 or a foundation year. See foundation courses in the UK.

How universities decide

Admissions teams usually look at:

  • Whether your previous subjects match the modules in the Year 1 or Year 2 you want to skip.
  • Your grades or class of award.
  • The level of the qualification on the UK framework.
  • Your English language evidence. See our guide to MOI letters and IELTS.
  • Whether your documents are official and verifiable.

Documents to prepare

  1. Official transcripts or statements of results.
  2. Certificates, including provisional certificates where final ones are not ready.
  3. Module or course descriptions (sometimes called a syllabus) if you want credit for specific subjects.
  4. Passport copy and English evidence.
  5. A personal statement explaining why you want to join a later year. See how to write a UCAS personal statement.

Benefits and risks

Benefits: possibly a shorter degree, lower total cost and earlier graduation.

Risks: the university may offer a lower entry year than you expected, may not credit every module, or may ask for extra study. Check the final fee and course length in the offer letter. Compare costs in our guide to the cost of studying in the UK.
