To apply to a UK university from Nigeria you normally need your degree certificate (or provisional certificate), an official transcript from your university, and your WAEC or NECO result. Request transcripts from your registry well before your deadline, ask for them in sealed or directly sent form where required, and check what your chosen university will accept.
Which academic documents do UK universities ask for?
| Document | Used for |
|---|---|
| Degree certificate or provisional certificate | Proves you have completed the degree |
| Official transcript | Shows modules and grades; used to assess your class of degree. See Nigerian CGPA to UK degree classification |
| WAEC/NECO result | Needed for undergraduate applications and sometimes for Master’s. See WAEC and NECO accepted UK universities |
| NYSC discharge or exemption certificate | Sometimes requested as supporting evidence; check each university |
| MOI letter | English evidence where accepted. See MOI letters |
How to get an official transcript in Nigeria
- Find the right office. Most universities handle transcripts through the registry or a dedicated transcript unit.
- Complete the request. Many require a written request, a fee payment receipt, a copy of your ID and your matriculation number. Some now have online request portals.
- Choose how it is delivered. Ask whether the transcript can be sent directly to the UK university or emailed from the registry, or handed to you in a sealed envelope.
- Do not open sealed envelopes. If the university requires a sealed transcript, an opened envelope may be rejected.
- Track the request. Keep the receipt and follow up by phone or email.
Provisional certificate vs final certificate
If your final certificate is not ready, a provisional certificate and an official transcript are often enough to make an application. Universities may make the offer conditional on receiving the final certificate later. Ask admissions what they accept.
WAEC and NECO results
Keep your result slip and check the online result checker for the exam body. Some universities ask you to share a scratch-card PIN and serial number or to upload a verified statement of result. See our guides on how to check WAEC and NECO results and using NECO results to study abroad.
Do you need a statement of comparability?
A UK ENIC statement of comparability is an optional report that compares a foreign qualification to a UK equivalent. It is useful when a university or the visa process asks you to prove the level of your degree, but many universities assess Nigerian degrees themselves. Do not pay for one until the university or visa guidance says it is needed.
Common problems and fixes
- Slow registry: Request documents as early as you can, ideally before you choose a university.
- Name mismatch: Make sure your name is the same on your passport, certificate and transcript. If not, prepare an affidavit or other official evidence of name change.
- Missing grades: Ask your department to issue a result statement and keep proof of the request.
- Unverified documents: UK universities and the Home Office can check documents, so never submit altered or borrowed documents.
Timeline: when to start
Start requesting transcripts at least two to three months before you plan to apply, since registry delays are common. Our September 2027 application timeline shows where this step fits.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply with an unofficial transcript?
Some universities allow a scanned copy at application stage, then ask for the official version later. Check each university’s rule.
Can an agent collect my transcript for me?
Only if your university’s registry allows it. Many require the student or an authorised person with a signed letter and ID.
How long does a transcript take in Nigeria?
It varies by university and the time of year. Ask the registry for an estimate and plan extra time.
Do I need to translate my documents?
Documents in English do not need translation. Documents in another language need a certified translation.
