It may still be possible, but time is tight. If you already have your academic documents, English evidence and funds ready, some UK universities with January starts may still accept applications, and a Student visa decision usually takes a few weeks. If your documents are not ready, a later intake (May or September 2027) is the safer plan.
Is it too late for the January 2027 intake?
It depends on your readiness, not only the calendar. A January start is a smaller intake, not all courses run, and many universities set earlier internal deadlines for international students because they need time for the CAS and the visa. Some will still consider late applicants, while others will have closed the course. The quickest way to find out is to ask the admissions team of your shortlisted universities which courses still have places.
A realistic timeline from today
| Stage | What must happen | Typical time (confirm) |
|---|---|---|
| Application and offer | Submit documents, receive an offer | From days to a few weeks |
| Meet conditions | English evidence, certificates, MOI or test, interview if required | Depends on you |
| Pay deposit and get CAS | Deposit, then the university issues CAS | Days, once everything is complete |
| Student visa | Online application, biometrics appointment, decision | Often around three weeks for a standard decision, but check current times on gov.uk |
| Travel and accommodation | Book flight and housing | Before course start |
Checklist: can you still make January?
- Do you hold your transcript, certificate or provisional certificate? See transcripts for UK applications.
- Do you have a valid English test or an accepted MOI? See MOI letter guide.
- Is your passport valid for the whole course?
- Are your funds in place for the required 28 days? See proof of funds.
- Does your course need ATAS? See ATAS guide.
- Can you pay the deposit quickly? See paying UK tuition from Nigeria.
If more than two of these are uncertain, plan for a later intake.
Other intakes if January is missed
- May or spring intake: offered by a limited number of universities and courses. See March and April intake in the UK.
- September 2027: the largest intake, with the most course choice. Use our month-by-month timeline.
Can you defer after a visa is approved?
Deferral rules are set by the university, and a new CAS and visa application may be needed. Read how to defer admission after UK visa approval.
Do not rush into mistakes
- Do not pay anyone who promises a guaranteed visa or a place that “cannot be missed”.
- Do not submit documents you have not checked. Errors can cause refusal. See common UK visa rejection reasons.
- Do not skip the interview preparation. See pre-CAS interview preparation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still apply for the UK January 2027 intake from Nigeria?
Possibly, at universities and courses that are still open. Contact admissions or an adviser immediately to confirm.
How long does a UK student visa take?
Standard decisions are often around three weeks after your biometrics appointment, but processing times change. Check gov.uk.
What if I miss the January deadline?
Consider a May 2027 intake where available, or September 2027, and use the extra time to improve documents and finances.
Does a late application reduce my chances?
Not by itself, but it leaves little room for delays. Prepared applicants with complete documents are in a better position.
